Premiering August 1

As the season begins, Luc and his friends are faced with a crisis: Anna-Maria is missing! Luc’s criminal instinct leads him to Anna-Maria’s hometown of Morgenthal, where he slowly uncovers the Giovanoli family’s darkest secrets. When a Boy Scout troop discovers a female corpse whose mutilations resemble those of an earlier victim, Luc has to ask himself a horrifying question: Is Anna-Maria being held captive by a serial killer?

He heads to the Giovanoli family home to find answers…

Actor/comedian Mike Müller returns as Luc Conrad, a former police detective turned funeral home director whose investigative instincts always get the better of him. These days his job is to comfort and console the bereaved, but as soon as Luc starts to suspect foul play his inner sleuth takes over. Lucky for Luc, he’s got a great support team at home – Erika Bürgisser, manager of the Conrad Institute funeral home and an old friend of Luc’s late father, and Fabio Testi, undertaker’s assistant, amateur gardener, avant-garde musician and proponent of fine Goth fashion. Filmed in the breathtakingly beautiful northern Swiss canton of Aargau, The Undertaker serves up equal helpings of sinister mystery, quirky comedy and heartfelt drama. It’s with tremendous sadness that we learned of the passing of Marcello Perracchio, the magnificent Sicilian character actor who played Doc Pasquano in all 30 Detective Montalbano movies. He brought a great humanity to his portrayal of the overworked coroner, making his scenes with sparring partner Montalbano one of the highlights of the series. He gave a candid interview to MHz Choice on the Montalbano set in 2012 about the series, his career and Sicily.

Godspeed, Marcello. You will be sorely missed.

A Myriad of Watching Options

In today’s ever changing world of home entertainment, there has never been more ways to watch your favorite shows, or “content” as the industry likes to label them. I’m a little old fashioned so calling my favorite TV show or film “content” feels a little impersonal. To this day, I don’t think I’ve ever exclaimed to a fellow fan of WKRP in Cincinnati  “THAT’S MY FAVORITE CONTENT!” So, if it’s all the same to you, I’m gonna stick with “shows”. Good? Good.

The Basics

Here at MHz Choice, we often are asked a variation of this question: “How can I watch MHz Choice on my TV?” Well, there are a variety of ways (which I cover in more detail below) but let’s get the basic requirements out of the way first.

What you DON’T need:
MHz Choice is an internet only video-on-demand service. MHz Choice is not available via cable or satellite providers so you do not need a cable or satellite account to access it.

What you DO need:
• A high-speed internet connection*¹
• An mhzchoice.com subscription or an MHz Choice on Amazon subscription*²
• A TV or supported device that can connect to the internet

I know what you’re thinking: “How do I know if my TV can connect to the internet?? WHY IS THIS SO HARD!??!” OK, breathe, we’re gonna get through this.

Most modern TVs and Smart TVs manufactured after 2010 come ready to be connected to the internet and/or have what’s called an “HDMI port” on the back. An HDMI port is where you plug in an external streaming device, like a Roku player, which in turn connects to the internet. (see fig. 1 below).

fig. 1

Option #1: Watch on a Streaming Device

Now that we’ve established the basics of how to watch, let’s get into the specifics. The first option is with a video streaming device. Great! But what’s a video streaming device? Simply put, a streaming device is an external piece of hardware that connects your TV to the internet. Below is a list of the different streaming devices that we currently support. Click on the links below to find out more about how to watch on each device.

Option #2: MHz Choice on Android TV

MHz Choice is now available on Android TV! Great! What does that mean?? Android TV is Google’s Smart TV platform and is available on a variety of devices:

  • Mi Box
  • NVIDIA SHIELD
  • Razer Forge TV
  • Sharp AQOUS
  • Sony BRAVIA

How do you get Android TV? If you have any of the above devices, all you need to do is launch the Google Play Store on your device, search for the MHz Choice app and install it!

Option #3: Roku TV

If you don’t want to purchase a separate streaming device and don’t want an Amazon Prime account, Roku now makes a TV that combines a Smart TV and a Roku streaming device. It’s called “Roku TV” (see fig. 2 below). With the Roku TV, you can connect to MHz Choice from the TV itself.

fig. 2

Click the link below for more information:
https://www.roku.com/roku-tv

Option #4: MHz Choice on Amazon Channels (Prime)*³

If you are an Amazon Prime member, you can watch MHz Choice by way of the Amazon Video app that should already be installed on your Smart TV. The Amazon Video app icon should resemble this (see fig 3 below):

fig. 3

To subscribe to MHz Choice through Amazon Channels (Prime):
1) Log into your Amazon Prime account by clicking here.
2) Add an MHz Choice subscription for $7.99 per month by clicking here.
3) Once you’ve added MHz Choice to your Amazon Prime account, launch the Amazon Video app on your Smart TV and then click on the MHz Choice banner graphic to watch MHz Choice programs.

Click here for more information on MHz Choice on Amazon Channels.

Option #5: Watch on your Smart TV’s web browser

Some of our subscribers have reported success watching by way of their Smart TV’s web browser. But your experience may vary. PLEASE NOTE: We do not fully support watching MHz Choice on Smart TV web browsers.

1) Launch your Smart TV’s web browser and log in to mhzchoice.com they same way you would on a computer or laptop.

Can I stream from my mobile device to my TV?

You sure can! With the MHz Choice iOS app you can stream from your Apple iPhone or iPad to a compatible Apple TV and with the MHz Choice Android app you can stream from your Android device to a Chromecast device. Click on the links below for more information.

Van Veeteren: Scandinavian Noir’s Softer Side

This series premieres on MHz Choice Aug. 15th!

Premiering August 15

He’s the dutch uncle you’d love to have – experienced, concerned, insightful. Sven Wollter plays retired police detective Van Veeteren in the series based on the bestselling novels by Håkan Nesser. Set in the fictional city of Maardam, a scandi anytown with names that even sound Dutch, the series explores themes we’ve come to expect from the Swedes – dysfunctional families, religious fanaticism, child abuse, suicide. But it doesn’t have the edgy feel that some of the Scandinavian Noir titles do. It’s got a measured, thoughtful pace and musical scoring that make the crimes seem like beautiful tragedies.

As the series begins, Van Veeteren plans his new life as a used bookstore owner and is about to pick up his son from prison release. He’s saying goodbye to young colleagues Münster (Thomas Hanzon) and Moreno (Eva Rexed), newly positioned to move up the ranks as lead investigators. They last about two seconds without him, of course, and in the subsequent days make a beeline to his bookstore to pick his brain about difficult cases. Over a bottle of dark ale, they get his perspective on investigating, human nature and their own lives. It’s more than talk, however – we end up seeing him in action through flashbacks and the times when he’s asked for or pushes himself into cases.

What makes Van Veeteren so watchable is the humanity of the central character. He’s generous and big-hearted, with blind spots as big as his best qualities. He’s relentless when working a case, he doesn’t always know when he’s pushed someone too hard, and his father’s heart has trouble letting his son go. Similar to Wallander, the Van Veeteren episodes are about more than individual cases – they’re about the art of police work and the heartbreak of fatherhood. He is perhaps the most likable of our Scandinavian crime protagonists.  Van Veeteren was one of the very first MHz DVD releases almost a decade ago, and we’re delighted to be able to add this much-loved show to the ever-growing MHz Choice library.

Bulletproof Heart starring Gigi Proietti now streaming!

Now Streaming!

Ready for another summer spritzer? The hit mystery series Bulletproof Heart features effervescent megastar Gigi Proietti, who’s entertained Italian audiences for decades. He began as a TV and film actor in the 1960s and shot to stardom in 1976 with a one-man comedy show, Look at Me, Please, which made him a household name. Americans might know him from US films such as The Appointment and A Wedding. He’s also had an illustrious theatrical career and has been the voiceover dubbing artist for actors like Robert De Niro, Sean Connery, Sylvester Stallone, Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Dustin Hoffman, Charlton Heston and Marlon Brando.

Bulletproof Heart takes place in a print newsroom, creating a nostalgic feel and a gentle screwball sensibility. Solid writing and a delightful ensemble cast bring forth riffs on journalism, aging, the joys of Italian food and the perils of love and family life. The cast even includes Gigi’s real-life daughter Carlotta Proietti, who pipes up as a minor comic character in the newsroom. The luminous Francesca Inaudi plays his daughter in the series, and if you think you’ve seen police chief Enrico (Giovanni Scifoni) before, you have. He played Vivaldi’s son Stefano in Inspector Vivaldi Mysteries, and guest starred in Don Matteo.

As the series begins, investigative reporter Bruno Palmieri is facing retirement when one last story captures his interest. So he’s back in the game, looking into what might have been a wrongful conviction. He lives in the same apartment building as his protective son, a cardiologist, and harbors a secret longing for a woman he loved years ago. That woman’s daughter ends up working on the paper with Bruno, which brings him across the path of his former love, reigniting their spark, etc. The comedy and romance take off from there.

The name of the series refers to Bruno living for 30 years with a bullet in his lodged in his heart, put there by an unknown shooter. It’s caused him to live carefully for three decades – too carefully, perhaps. In this scene, he’s trying to talk sense to his daughter-in-law, Giovanna, who’s locked herself in her room because of a few of her own fears.

Bulletproof Heart is an unabashed valentine to Rome – from the sumptuous aerials in the opening credits, to the transition shots between scenes and the references to Roman dishes. It’s got surprises like Bruno’s standup routine at the end of each episode, or the funny dialogue between him and his photographer friend Fiocchi, played by Italian comedian Marco Marzocca. The two of them together are a comedy act of their own – talk about nonverbals.

Summer’s not over yet, folks. Let’s keep the party going!

Below is an excerpt from Proietti’s one-man show, Look at Me, Please, in which he did a routine about how Americans sound to Italians.

Looking for something to binge this weekend? Go ahead and lose yourself in the world of action and espionage with the Hamilton collection on MHz Choice!

The Hamilton Collection

Carl Gustaf Gilbert Hamilton is a Swedish nobleman who, after training with the Navy SEALs in San Diego, returned home to work for Swedish intelligence. Operating out of a restored 18th century villa outside Stockholm (or sometimes in a tricked-out apartment in the city, complete with its own secret indoor firing range!) Hamilton fights for freedom and social justice around the globe. He’s been called Sweden’s answer to 007 and is the creation of author and journalist Jan Guillou, who used his own real-life experiences when creating the character.

Author Jan Guillou
(courtesy piratforlaget.se)

In 1973, Guillou and a fellow reporter gained fame for exposing a secret military intelligence organization in Sweden. Three decades later, a tabloid newspaper accused Guillou of having been a KGB collaborator in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Guillou confirmed that he’d had contacts with the KGB during that period, but said they were part of his work as a journalist. Regardless of that controversy, Guillou’s background provided an authentic basis for his first Hamilton novel, published in 1986; eleven more Hamilton novels followed over the next two decades.

The books were an instant success, and it didn’t take long for them to be adapted for both the big and small screen. Stellan Skarsgård starred as Hamilton in a pair theatrical releases starting in 1989, but the big breakthrough came the following year with an eight-part TV series…

Enemy’s Enemy

DRAMA – CRIME | SWEDEN | SCANDINAVIAN CRIME FICTION | SWEDISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-14

Peter Haber in Enemy's Enemy

Peter Haber (Beck) stars as Swedish super-spy Carl Hamilton in this adaptation of Guillou’s novel Fiendens fiende. It’s a vintage Cold War drama circa 1990 (think John le Carré meets 007) filmed on location in London, Morocco and Moscow. Each episode features specially-filmed video introductions by the author, which add to the authentic feel. Haber’s Hamilton is young, suave and sophisticated, equally at home with a gun in his hand as he is verbally outwitting double agents in the interrogation room. Along for the ride is Krister Henriksson (Wallander) as Hamilton’s main man in Moscow. Also, keep your eyes peeled for a very young Mikael Persbrandt, who makes a quick cameo appearance as a truck driver in the last episode – throwing a tantrum, as always! More on Persbrandt below…

Hamilton

DRAMA – CRIME | SWEDEN | SWEDISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-14

Mikael Persbrandt in Hamilton

A contemporary take on the Swedish super-spy, this time starring Mikael Persbrandt as an older, grizzled, more physical version of Hamilton. Influenced as much by the Bourne movies as by Guillou’s original stories, these two epic action movies, released theatrically in Sweden to big box office, are slickly-shot and a lot of fun. Veteran actor Lennart Hjulström features in both films as Hamilton’s boss, DG. Hjulström also co-starred with Persbrandt in Medicine Man and as Martin’s arch-enemy Gavling in the first season of Beck

Vendetta

DRAMA | SWEDEN | SCANDINAVIAN CRIME FICTION | SWEDISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-14

Stefan Sauk in Vendetta

Stefan Sauk stars in this 1995 Swedish-Italian co-production, which follows Hamilton as he takes on the Sicilian Mafia. If Peter Haber is the Bond of the Hamilton series and Mikael Persbrandt is the Jason Bourne, then Sauk’s is a ’70s-style Clint Eastwood/Charles Bronson vigilante portrayal. Gritty and intense! Sauk, most recently seen on MHz Choice as a rather pompous, Hamilton-esque father of the bride in Episode 5 of Thicker Than Water, was a surprising choice for the role: at the time, he was best known as a comedian on a very popular Swedish TV sketch show in which he did impressions and played a variety of zany characters. But Sauk acquitted himself well in the role, which led to more dramatic parts on TV and film. Fans of MHz Choice’s Italian shows will recognize a lot of the Italian actors too!

Commander Hamilton

DRAMA – CRIME | SWEDEN | SCANDINAVIAN CRIME FICTION | SWEDISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-14

Peter Stormare in Commander Hamilton

This 1997 production is a throwback to cheesy ’80s action flicks, starring Peter Stormare (Fargo, The Blacklist) as the most over-the-top Hamilton yet. (This is the version where the character earned the moniker Carl “Chainsaw” Hamilton.) Mark Hamill plays Hamilton’s nemesis, a renegade ex-CIA agent who thinks he’s the Joker. Campy fun! Krister Henriksson makes an amusing cameo, and Russian actor Evgeniy Lazarev co-stars as Major General Yuri Chivartsev, the FSB’s head of espionage in Sweden – a role he originally played opposite Peter Haber’s Hamilton in Enemy’s Enemy!

Season 2 premieres Aug. 29th!

Season 2 brings more of Klaus’ unique brilliance paired with a physical and social awkwardness that seem to work against his getting together with in-house psychologist, Frieda Jung.

Season 2 Premieres August 29

The Tatort franchise recently produced its 1000th episode, starring one of its most popular detectives, Klaus Borowski (Axel Milberg). His popularity comes as no surprise to MHz Choice viewers, who got a good, long look at his odd self in the first season of Tatort: Borowski. Season 2 brings more of Klaus’ unique brilliance, paired with a physical and social awkwardness that seem to work against his getting together with in-house psychologist, Frieda Jung.

Besides their very human and interesting detectives, the Tatort series also bring sass into their portrayal of various German regions and neighboring countries. In the upcoming episode Tango for Borowski, beautiful Finland is presented as a primitive, scary, backwoods, ends-of-the-earth kind of place. Of course, Borowski gets stuck there on a mission, and we get to watch him writhe in the Land of the Midnight Sun. Which for him, is the Land of No Shut-Eye.

Another classic aspect of the Tatort series is its retro theme song, unchanged from the early ‘70s. It was composed and performed by the amazing German saxophonist Klaus Doldinger, who also scored hit films such as Das Boot and The Neverending Story. We all know the Tatort theme from the opening and closing credits, but that’s just the first 45 seconds. Here’s the piece in its entirety. Klaus Doldinger plays a Hohner Klavinet using a heavy wah-wah effect, Udo Lindenburg (who went on to become Germany’s first German singing rockstar) on drums and Lothar Maid on bass (who later played in seminal krautrock band Amon Düül II). Check out the groove around 1:10 in –

There’s been heated debate in Germany about changing the theme song, but sanity seems to have prevailed and it will remain unchanged. You can also catch Klaus Doldinger (age 81) as he tours internationally with his band, Passport. He’s still rockin’ what he wrote almost 50 years ago.

1864: Premiering September 12th!

1864, the acclaimed Danish historical epic from the makers of Borgen, premieres September 12th only on MHz Choice! This sweeping, eight-part blockbuster was produced by Danish public broadcaster DR, the makers of Borgen, and Miso Film, the production company behind popular TV series Varg Veum and Those Who Kill. It’s a rare foray into historical drama from a region better known for contemporary crime drama. According to writer/director Ole Bornedal, it’s all a question of resources. “Even though recent Scandinavian TV series have marketed themselves successfully on the international scene as some of the most interesting and probing psychological dramas, budgets are still very limited,” Bornedal explained. “It is only with the aid of government funding that this production was made possible.” In the end, 1864 turned out to be the most expensive Danish TV series ever, with an estimated budget of 23 million euros – every cent of it up on the screen!

Trailers

Knowledge of Danish History Not Required

Viewers don’t need to know anything about Danish history to enjoy the series – indeed, actress Sarah-Sofie Boussnina said in a 2015 interview that she knew little about the series’ historical background when she was cast in it! Writer/director Ole Bornedal has crafted what he describes as a “factual fairy tale” with strong people at its center, one that requires no knowledge of the Schleswig-Holstein wars as a prerequisite – just sit back and enjoy a gripping, extraordinarily well-told story.

“It’s a classic story about power and the abuse of power and of people getting separated.”
– Writer/Director Ole Bornedal

Following the 1851 defeat of the Prussians in the First Schleswig-Holstein War, Danish nationalism swells. Bishop D.G. Monrad, the leader of the Danish Parliament, rides a populist wave to power and hatches a scheme to annex the duchy of Schleswig into the Danish Kingdom – a move which makes a new war with Prussia inevitable. Two peasant brothers, Laust and Peter, are caught up in history and called to serve in what will turn out to be one of Europe’s bloodiest-ever battles…

Meanwhile, in 2014, the young maladjusted Claudia, who recently lost her brother in the war in Afghanistan, goes to work as a personal assistant to an eccentric, 100-year-old baron who lives in a mansion near the place where Peter and Laust grew up. There, Claudia finds an ancient diary and through it becomes an eyewitness to history, and to the extraordinary story of Laust, Peter and Inge – the woman they both loved!

1864: All-Star Cast

The series’ ensemble cast is anchored by a trio of well-known faces from Borgen. Sidse Babett Knudsen (Westworld), best-known as Borgen’s prime minister, plays the actress Johanne Luise Heiberg, who is Bishop Monrad’s “Lady Macbeth” muse and feeds his nationalist zeal. Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones), who was troubled spin doctor Kasper Juul in Borgen, plays a cowardly, loathsome character named Didrich in 1864. And Søren Malling, determined news editor Torben Friis in Borgen, is recognizable (just) as the mysterious, mystical soldier Johan in 1864. Additionally, two familiar faces from another popular Danish series round out the cast – Nicolas Bro, art dealer Freddie Holst in The Bridge 3, plays the mad Bishop Monrad in 1864, and our modern-day protagonist Claudia is played by Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, who was the very pregnant Jeanette in The Bridge 3.

“We are living for the future, not the past. Even if the past is the sheer definition of what we are and why.”
– Writer/Director Ole Bornedal

Cast

Production Stills

With its first-class production values, gripping story and strong cast, 1864 may have all the hallmarks of a slick Hollywood blockbuster, but its story is deeply rooted in the Danish national psyche. “1864 was the last ‘great war’, a punishing conflict that relegated Denmark to the tiny nation it is today,” Bornedal explained. “The tragic loss and ultimate humiliation became a turning point for the nation, moving from an outward-looking perspective, defining itself as an influential nation in Europe, to one of looking inwards, defining itself and its qualities as a people – for better or worse – as one family. What is known today as the ‘Danish welfare model’ – the nation taking care of all of its citizens – has its offspring from that new momentum and self-definition. Thus, as in many of life’s instances, the chaos, conflict and suffering of wartime generated a new creative soil to grow in.”

Labor Day marks the (unofficial) end of summer – and what a summer it’s been for MHz Choice! Here’s a look at some of this summer’s most popular shows for you to binge on this Labor Day weekend – and also some sneak peeks at what’s coming up on MHz Choice in 2018!

Aldo Moro: 55 Days to Death | The Last Godfather

CRIME DRAMA | ITALY | ITALIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES

Summer kicked off (unofficially) with a pair of gripping true-life miniseries starring Italian icon Michele Placido of The Octopus/La Piovra fame. In Aldo Moro: 55 Days to Death, Placido stars as the titular Christian Democrat leader who endured captivity after being abducted by a Communist faction in Rome in 1978.

In The Last Godfather, Placido plays notorious mob boss Bernardo Provenzano, who eluded authorities for 43 years until his eventual capture in 2006. Placido embodies each of these very different men with such apparent ease that it’s easy to forget it’s the same actor in both roles! And if you crave more true Italian crime stories, we’ve got you covered: Coming to MHz Choice in 2018 (or maybe sooner, you never know…) is Transatlantic Ties, a two-part miniseries chronicling the real-life exploits of Boris Giuliano, a policeman in Palermo who worked with US federal law enforcement to bust up Sicilian heroin trafficking rings in the 1970s.

Magellan

MYSTERY | FRANCE | FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-PG

One of the breakout hits of the summer, Magellan stars Jacques Spiesser as a homicide detective and single father of two girls in the fictional French town of Saignac. It’s the perfect summer series: light, non-edgy, with beautiful settings and a terrific ensemble cast. But don’t just take it from us, here’s what the New York Times said about the show: “It’s a cozy-mystery cop show set in a bucolic provincial town, and its similarities to the long-running British series ‘Midsomer Murders’ are legion. If you’re not afraid to admit you’re a ‘Midsomer’ fan, you should start watching ‘Magellan’ immediately.” Catch up on Season 1 this weekend and get ready for Season 2 in 2018 – if not sooner. Stay tuned for news!

MYSTERY | ITALY | ITALIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-14

The two most recent installments of Andrea Camilleri’s wildly popular Italian mystery premiered on MHz Choice at the end of June. Both A Nest of Vipers and According to Protocol proved, if any proof was needed, that Luca Zingaretti and the gang are still firing on all cylinders and have plenty of gas left in the tank. These two feature-length episodes were also the swan songs for popular Sicilian character actor Marcello Perracchio, who has played cannoli-loving coroner Doc Pasquano from the very beginning of the series. Mr. Perracchio passed away on July 28th, and you can watch our heartfelt tributes to this much-loved artist here.

Blue Eyes

DRAMA | SWEDEN | SWEDISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | TV-14

This acclaimed Swedish thriller premiered in July and MHz Choice subscribers loved its mix of strong female characters, political machinations and mystery. “Very powerful.” “Suspenseful!” “Another good series!” “Love blue eyes!“ and “Apparently we all have the same impression! It’s hard to imagine this as the ending… even though it was a ‘great ride’!” are just some of the comments we received. For the record, no further episodes of Blue Eyes are planned for production, but we have more great Swedish shows coming to MHz Choice later this year and next, including the four-part thriller Missing, which stars original Annika Bengtzon actress Helena Bergström and her daughter, Molly Nutley, who also played Kim in Thicker Than Water (see below) – another MHz Choice summer favorite!

It’s with tremendous sadness that we learned of the passing of acclaimed The Scent of Rain in the Balkans director Ljubiša Samardžić after a long illness. He was 81 years old. He will be remembered as one of the most famous actors in Former Yugoslavia and Serbia. Below is a tribute from Cinema Design. You can read the full tribute and photo gallery at this link here.

Ljubisa Samardzic has a rich acting, directing and producing career behind him. He was born in Skopje in 1936. He is one of the most popular actors of post WWII Yugoslavia, while his name appeared in the credits of more than 200 films.

He won a Golden Lion/Copa Volpi in Venice in 1967, six Golden Arenas in Pula (former Yugoslavia), as well as numerous Grand Prix awards for producing and directing.

The films he appeared in were shown at the festivals all over the world, from Cannes to Karlovy Vary, from Berlin to Venice.

He often appears in the projects he produces, but he didn’t appear in his directing debut “Sky Hook”. The film competed at the 50th Berlin Film Festival. Film was a response to NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999 and an effort to create a new filming trend.

The second film “Natasha” won a Golden Arena in Pula for a lead female role and an award for the best film at the Albena festival, as well as an artist award at the MEDFilm 2002 in Rome.

The last TV series The Scent of Rain in the Balkans, 14 episodes from 2011/12, was pronounced by Emmy Awards 2012 as one of the top 10 series in the world.

1864 director Ole Bornedal is one of the most acclaimed of the Danish “New Wave” directors who achieved prominence in the 1990s. His breakout film was the stylish 1994 thriller Nattevagten (Night Watch), which introduced a very young Kim Bodnia (The Bridge). His first English language picture was the remake Nightwatch (1997) starring Ewan McGregor, and his most recent was the 2012 horror hit The Possession.

1864 Director Ole Bornedal

His other films include the expansive historical epic I Am Dina (2002), a stylistic precursor of sorts to 1864, and the Danish thriller Just Another Love Story (2007), which stars Beck actress Rebecka Hemse. Bornedal recently announced that his next film will be a sequel to the original Nattevagten – reuniting him with his old colleague Kim Bodnia!

In this 2014 interview, Bornedal talks about the genesis of 1864, the challenges of setting up Danish TV’s biggest-ever production, and what the legacy of the war of 1864 means to the Danish people today.

1864 is the first Danish epic drama series of this size. Why?

OB: Epic dramas are extremely rare in Scandinavia where the high production costs make it very difficult to explore historical themes. Even though recent Scandinavian TV series have marketed themselves successfully on the international scene as some of the most interesting and probing psychological dramas, budgets are still very limited. In fact, it is only with the aid of government funding that this production was made possible – a funding process I found very challenging.

Why tell a story about the war of 1864?

OB: As individuals we are all built on the history of our nations – our genes inherited from our parents and their parents before them – the ones who cultivated the soil and fought not just the daily battles of survival, but the real wars as well. We tend to forget in the global consumer society that the issues at hand are always the next issues and not the ones we left behind. We live for the future and not the past – even if the past is the absolute definition of what we are and why. There is no such thing as a ‘Scandinavian war film’ for quite obvious reasons. Historically, the big wars meant either neutrality for our country or, at most, stories of small resistance groups fighting Nazis.

What does 1864 mean for the Danes of today?

OB: 1864 was the last “great war”, a punishing conflict that relegated Denmark to the tiny nation it is today. A nation that over the centuries developed from being the ultimate power in northern Europe, to end up being humiliated and more or less disgraced in the eyes of European politics. In a meaningless war built on a thin layer of euphoric nationalism, its outcome, more or less, defines contemporary Denmark and the Danes. The tragic loss and ultimate humiliation became a turning point for the nation, moving from an outward- looking perspective, defining itself as an influential nation in Europe, to one of looking inwards, defining itself and its qualities as a people – for better or worse – as one family. What is known today as the “Danish welfare model” – the nation taking care of all of its citizens – has its offspring from that new momentum and self-definition. Thus, as in many of life’s instances, the chaos, conflict and suffering of wartime generated a new creative soil to grow in.

What is the story?

OB: 1864 has many characters and consists of many tales. But foremost we follow two brothers, Laust and Peter, and their relationship with Inge, a quite extraordinary woman for the times  – a modern woman, intelligent and beautiful and fighting for her rights. A relationship rooted in childhood, as they grow up together, it gets both stronger and problematic as both Laust and Peter fall in love with her. The brothers are simple peasants, and quite unlike the spoiled and tormented Baron’s son, Didrich, who is also in love with Inge. During this time the national liberals in Copenhagen, led by Hall, Lundbye and especially Monrad, are talking about expanding the nation, creating one large Kingdom and annexing the county of Slesvig to make this happen. This, despite all treaties stating it would be against international law and result in provoking the German state to no end. But Denmark is euphoric, self-confident and strong, a nation freshened by new winds, new ideas and a new constitution. However, across the border, there is Prussia and Bismarck. It’s a classic story about power and the abuse of power and of people getting separated.

What is your relationship to the story?

OB: The battle at Dybbøl Mill has always held my interest. I am knowledgeable as to the historical relationships behind the battle and the personalities that were an influential part of it. But if it is romance, war or drama, if it’s poetic, factual, intimate, expressive or brutal, I’ll leave that up to the film gods. The closest one can come to an answer is this: that 1864 encompassed it all. I have seldom had a story in my hands that was so open for the telling of such deep, universal stories. And the more I investigated it, the more attracted I was, as it was so generous. Throughout many years I have thought of these pictures: A thundering heaven with fear-stricken Danish soldiers underneath it, and then the Prussians attack and within a few hellish hours father and son are extinguished in a savage storm of violence that was to be forever engrained in the Danish national consciousness. And strangely enough, ultimately forgotten. I always thought that there must be one big story in this for all of us. A history of people caught in a mad and fatal reality, and this story I am very happy to be able to tell.

Does 1864 depict the actual history of the war?

OB: As with all historical film or TV productions, artistic liberties need to be taken within the historical context. Some characters we make too much of, others, much too little. These choices are made to enable the proper function of a dramatic correctness within our story as opposed to a historical correctness. For example, Heiberg is overdone as a dramatic figure, but the point is that as a cultural figure she most likely, via detours, played a large and inspirational role in the war, just as Grundtvig did. It is historically correct that the cultural elite supported this war, and that is what we have described. But how we do it has been influenced by our artistic freedom.

Season 2 Premieres September 19th!

Ready for another Roman holiday? Season 2 of Bulletproof Heart brings back the merriment with Gigi Proietti and the gang. The only addition is newspaper editor, Gabriele (Massimo Poggio), who’s replaced the scheming vixen, Renzoni and bounced her back to the newsroom. Besides Proietti’s starpower, Bulletproof Heart also features a terrific ensemble of established comic and dramatic actors, many of whom MHz Choice viewers have seen in other series. There’s one comic actress new to the MHz Choice library, however – Luciana De Falco, who plays the court records librarian, Wanda. Most episodes have a scene in which Bruno (Proietti) has to sweet talk Wanda into letting him see court records without the requisite paperwork. Always painful for him, and delicious to watch!

Denmark’s Prestige Television Event

1864 | Miniseries

This eight-hour miniseries, billed as the most ambitious and expensive in Danish television history, is anchored around two brothers who fight in the bloody battle at Dybbøl Mill. But it’s really about how the war of 1864 shaped Danish history. The pilot begins with a group of bored students on a field trip and then flashes back to tell the stories of those who fought at the site they are visiting. As the focus shifts between contemporary Denmark and the events leading up to the war that creator Ole Bornedal claims “defines contemporary Denmark,” we are invited to contemplate how much can change in 150 years—and the role that institutions have in shaping or resisting that change. For those unfamiliar with European history, the series is both educational as well as engaging. Content advisory: The pilot episode contains a moderate amount of profane and obscene language; young boys experiment with masturbation.

Missing, a brand-new Scandi Noir thriller from the director and star of Annika Bengtzon: Deadline & Paradise, premieres October 3rd only on MHz Choice!

Premieres October 3rd!

In this dark and suspenseful four-part miniseries, Helena Bergström (the original Annika Bengtzon) plays Maja Silver, an inspector with the Stockholm police department who returns to her hometown in the Swedish Bible Belt in an attempt to reconnect with her daughter. Their family reunion is interrupted by a terrible discovery as an emaciated girl is found dead on a highway. When another local girl disappears, Maja finds herself embroiled in an intense search for the truth. The investigation leads her to a charismatic preacher who holds mysterious sway over his flock – but as the search for the missing girl intensifies, it becomes clear that many in the community have their own secrets…

Helena Bergström stars in Missing

Missing depicts what happens when fear takes hold of a small community, where everyone has their own secrets.”

– Director Colin Nutley

Director Colin Nutley’s first TV drama in almost two decades is a family affair: Nutley and his wife Helena Bergström have a long history of collaboration, and this time they are joined by their daughter Molly Nutley, a rising young talent who made a big impact as Kim in Thicker Than Water. In Missing, Molly plays Becky, Maja Silver’s estranged daughter, and the scenes between real-life mother and daughter crackle with tension and electricity.

The distinguished cast also includes Johan Widerberg, who steals every scene he’s in as the Svengali-esque Pastor Stein, and Samuel Fröler (who played Johan Falk’s buddy Sven in Executive Protection) as the father of the missing girl.

Molly Nutley as Becky

Also of note is the music: equal parts blues, country and gospel, composed and performed by Swedish singer-songwriter Daniel Norgren. Norgren’s been making waves in Europe for almost a decade, and his very first US tour kicked off in September 2017. Influenced as much by American movies as by the Swedish countryside where he grew up, Norgren records his songs on a lo-fi four-track with home-made instruments, adding thick layers of eerie atmosphere to the proceedings – as you can hear in the trailer, which features the standout track ‘Mean Old Devil Got On’.

Samuel Fröler as Dan Berglund
Ziggy

Scandinavian audiences enthusiastically greeted Missing when it premiered in January 2017 – it set a new streaming record for Swedish TV channel C More, shattering the previous record held by the last season of Beck! So get ready to immerse yourself in a brand-new Scandinavian mystery… and get ready to meet Ziggy, we think you’ll dig him too!

Missing premieres October 3rd – only on MHz Choice!

Greed, unvarnished ambition, sexual intrigue, the triumph of love. That may sound like a day in the life at MHz Choice, but it’s the new two-part drama A Dangerous Fortune, based on the blockbuster novel by Ken Follett.

Premieres October 3rd!

In the sweeping epic set in Victorian London, star-crossed lovers Maisie and Hugh meet as children through wretched circumstances and never forget each other. They travel wildly divergent paths: Maisie grows up as a London street urchin, and Hugh becomes the scion of the Pilaster banking dynasty. They meet again as young adults across the canyon of an economic divide.

It’s a German production, so get ready for the sight and sound of German actors portraying Londoners (a la Donna Leon’s Brunetti in Venice and Homicide Unit Istanbul in Turkey). Here’s a special treat: Axel Milberg from Tatort: Borowski plays Samuel Pilaster, Hugh’s ostracized, homosexual uncle. Do not miss his character’s attempt at singing 34 minutes into part 2. For Milberg fans, another memorable moment.

Author Ken Follet (©Barbara Follet)

If you enjoyed the novel, prepare yourself for a restructuring of the story, with different emphases and parts omitted. Whereas the book establishes the relationships between Hugh, Solly, Edward and Mickey as boarding school classmates, the TV production drops that and presents the foursome as as adults. The novel is more about murder, whereas the television production emphasizes love and intrigue.

Laura de Boer stars in A Dangerous Fortune
Axel Milberg (Samuel) and Jeanette Hain (Augusta)

However, taken on its own terms, A Dangerous Fortune packs a wallop. Fast-paced and witty, with social themes that would please Dickens, it sweeps you into the world of London streets, Victorian banking, ruthless villains and characters undone by their own blindness. It stars British heartthrob Dominic Thorburn as Hugh Pilaster and Dutch actress Laura de Boer as Maisie. Their chemistry pops, making the love story satisfyingly wrenching. And if you notice Thorburn doesn’t seem to be speaking German… you’re right. He’s saying his lines in English and was dubbed by a German voice actor.

Laura de Boer (Maisie) and Dominic Thorburn (Hugh)
Dominic Thorburn (Hugh) and Daniel Sträßer (Solly)

So grab a scone, get the Kleenex handy and jump in. As kind-hearted Solly asks Maisie in part 1, “Do you believe in love?”
